What's NewConsultations, research and discussions with Albertans have played an important role in refining the direction of the province's Plan for Parks. Key components of the proposed plan have been received positively by the public and key stakeholder groups. Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture minister, the Honourable Hector Goudreau, has had initial discussions with his government colleagues regarding the Plan for Parks. A formal decision on the Plan for Parks is expected early in the new year. The ParksAlberta's parks and protected areas protect and preserve nature and habitat, and provide an opportunity to experience the incredible natural beauty of this province. The province's 500 provincial parks and protected areas receive more than 8 million visits every year. Every Albertan is within an hour's drive of one of these natural areas, and this is part of what makes Alberta a great place to live, work and visit. 2007 is the 75th anniversary of Alberta's provincial parks. Much has been accomplished, and planning for a future that will continue to showcase and preserve our natural landscapes is underway. The MandateAlberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture has a mandate to develop a plan for provincial parks and recreation areas to accommodate population growth and improve quality of life opportunities. The PlanThe plan will provide a framework for decisions regarding funding, protection and improvement of Alberta's parks. It will build on the current services and experiences offered by Alberta's parks and plan ahead for the future protection of the land. The ProcessA decade of previous Government of Alberta research on parks and protected areas has been reviewed along with public input from the recent Land Use Framework consultations and annual provincial parks visitor surveys. From this research, a set of key components have been developed for a new Alberta plan for long-term growth and sustainability for the province's parks and protected areas. Each component reflects an area for improvement identified in discussions with key stakeholders, municipal park authorities, First Nations organizations and in public opinion research. Additional information will be updated on this website as the process moves forward. More Information Vision and goalsLevels of Park Protection History Camping Natural Heritage Business Plan |
