Grant MacEwan Literary Awards
The 2008 Grant MacEwan Literary Awards are undergoing some changes. Although the criteria and purpose of the Awards will remain the same, there are new application forms (forthcoming) and a new deadline for submissions. What Are the Awards?
The Grant MacEwan Literary Awards were created by the Government of Alberta to provide a literary legacy for noted author and former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Dr. Grant MacEwan, who passed away in 2000. The Awards consist of two distinct programs offered each year:
The Grant MacEwan Young Writer's Scholarships are awarded to four young Albertans (aged 16-25) for a short story or a short piece of literary non-fiction that engages Alberta (its history, landscape, culture, etc.) or the spirit of Dr. MacEwan's many interests. Each Scholarship winner receives $2,500 to be used for a formal program of study or mentorship.
The Grant MacEwan Author's Award is awarded for the best book by an Alberta author published by a professional publishing house in the previous copyright year. The winner receives $25,000, and three shortlist authors each receive $1,000.
The criteria for both programs are deliberately open-ended in order to encourage applications from all of Alberta's diverse literary community. Each year's expert panel of jurors will adjudicate entries in the context of the artistic and thematic range of the applications received.
What's new?
Beginning in 2008, the Grant MacEwan Literary Awards will be a program of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The new deadline for submissions to both programs is May 1, 2008, and Award recipients will be formally announced in the fall of 2008.
Application forms and additional information will be available on this website in early 2008. Please note: old application forms are no longer valid.
